In celebration of Black History Month, London Arts and Health and The Culture Health and Wellbeing Alliance are commissioning five artists to write a blog exploring their creative practice, showcasing an existing body of work that engages with this year’s theme of ‘Honouring our Communities’.

‘Honouring our Communities’ encourages us to explore the importance of community, the spaces where people find belonging and acknowledge the places, people and connections that shape, support and sustain us every day. It asks us to think about the people we honour, the stories we choose to tell, and those whose impact has not always received the recognition it deserves.
We are focusing on artists across the UK who are being recognised as changemakers within the realm of creative health and social justice, whose contributions are central to the continued resilience, progress and identity of Black communities.
Call for artists
We are looking to commission:
• 2 artists based in London with London Arts and Health membership
• 3 artists based anywhere in the UK
What’s on offer
Each commissioned artist will receive £150 in line with our policy on paid engagement with freelance, unwaged, part-time or low-waged colleagues.
Artists can contribute in the form of:
• A written blog, creative reflection, or case story featuring excerpts of their existing work which explores the theme through the use of varying mediums (e.g art, photography, video)
Your pitch should describe your work, your approach, and your Black History Month project submission in detail.
How will your work be shared?
The commissioned artworks and artist profiles will be showcased from mid to late October via:
• Our social media platforms
• The London Arts and Health and the Culture, Health & Wellbeing Alliance website
• The CHWA bulletin and LAH newsletter
Timelines for the BHM Commission
Deadline to submit your pitch via the Google form: 5pm, Wednesday 30th September. If you’re successful, you will hear from us by Tuesday 6th October. You will be asked to make your final submission (please refer to ‘What’s on Offer’) for Black History Month by Monday 19th October.
Submissions will be shared on CHWA and LAH website and social media from mid to late October.
